Understanding Satellite Internet Access

Although there are some technical issues for end users to be aware of, such as latency, this only affects customers seeking to play real-time interactive games online. Signal loss due to precipitation is extremely minimal and the service is up to 30-times faster than dialup Internet providers and considerably more reliable.
Latency is caused when the request for data is transmitted from your satellite modem to the satellite orbiting the earth and then returned. The delay is approximately half a second, not noticeable if you are browsing the Internet, reading email or even downloading. It can however cause significant headaches to customers trying to use applications like VOIP, VPN and video conferencing.
Another way satellite Internet differs from cable, DSL or dialup is the use of a Fair Access Policy, a device put in place to guarantee that every end user can download a pre-determined amount of files, using an allotment of bandwidth, without affecting other users. Ever been on a DSL connection that for whatever reason begins to crawl or attempted to connect to a dialup server but couldn’t because of capacity issues, satellite providers afford their customers this protection policy. It is also important to note that only 4% of all WildBlue Satellite Internet customers are ever affected by FAP. HughesNet considerable higher by comparison, however HughesNet offers a daily allotment of bandwidth to it users, while WildBlue uses a revolving 30-day period, in other words whatever you use today you will receive back in your account in 30-days. This rolling 30-day period makes going over your bandwidth threshold less likely.
Satellite Internet is not as scary as it seems, for the timid, the hardware involved is as follows: ? Satellite Modem – connected to your computer through a USB port, this allows the ISP’s routers to connect to proxy servers, which enforce bandwidth limits and guarantees fair use by all end users. ? Satellite Dish – The satellite modem connects to a cable that is run to the satellite dish, either mounted to the physical property or a pole. That’s it!
For dialup and DSL users, no need for a phone line. The service is always on.
For customers seeking to use Satellite Internet’s speed over that of a dialup ISP, for the purposes of working from home or distance learning or e-learning, a word of caution about the use of VPN’s. VPN or Virtual Private Network software doesn’t handle the delay or latency of packets sent to VPN servers. Because the VPN acts as a tunnel from one network to another it requires authentication and once accepted needs to keep that handshake throughout the process of working on that network. The latency will break that authentication handshake and cause the end user to constantly have to validate to access the VPN. Not recommended with satellite Internet, but consult the IT guru for the VPN for their input. Special IP stacks and possibly proxies can lessen the effects of latency, so check into it.

A Simple Way to Address Common Wireless Network Problems

There are a number of widely known techniques that make computing much easier. Sadly, some of these are not taught to novice users. For example: losing connection to a wireless router is a basic problem with a simple fix many users do not know about that will eliminate a vast majority of the problems that cause this symptom.
r
rWhen you drop your connection to your wireless router, power cycling the modem and router will likely resolve the issue completely. A number of users do not know how to perform this simple task. It's a sad fact that just about any router and modem on the market will need an occasional power cycle. They run constantly and will at times run into conflicts that can be resolved with a simple restart.
r
rIf you try to resolve the problem by calling for support, you'll probably experience the following: aAfter wasting an hour on hold with the internet service provider, you will be lead through a series of unnecessary steps to rule out serious but not terribly common problems. Since so many of these issues can be quickly resolved by power cycling, it makes sense to learn this technique before calling up tech support.
r
rTo power cycle your modem and router, all you need to do it unplug both devices. That's it. If your modem has a battery, reset it after you've unplugged the wireless router. While each device is somewhat different, you should wait an average of two minutes before plugging back in both devices. If either unit feels unusually hot, you might want to wait until they cool down a bit before powering up.
r
rOnce enough time has passed, plug in your modem. Allow your modem to completely boot and conenct back up to the internet. After it is back online, plug in your wireless router. Once your router is also functional, attempt to connect your computers to the network.
r
rIt can sometimes be helpful to reboot your computers before connecting them to the router. This will allow them to connect using a fresh IP address. IP address conflicts are an all too frequent cause for network connectivity issues.
r
rIt is regretable that modems and routers aren't made with a technical mechanism that can solve this issue for inexperienced users. Since it is such a common and needed practice, it really should be clearly indicated to every user as an aspect of proper network maintenance. If internet service providers offered instructions on power cycling to each new customer, it would probably save a bundle on phone support costs. Countless hours of technical support service are wasted on a procedure that will be necessary for nearly every user. In fact, this is something that most people will have to do quite frequently.
r
rAs this issue requires changes in the states of both the modem and router, it is difficult to create the type of uniform process that would be needed for a purely technical solution. However, it is not a huge undertaking to enable even the casual user to solve this problem without further complications. Education is the only realistic answer. While it certianly isn't the biggest challenge facing humanity, there is a value in solving this communication issue. Routers and modems need frequent power cycling, and most people do not know how to do it.

keunggulan dan kekurangan sierra 881u HSDPA

Modem Sierra 881u

Kelebihan modem Sierra 881u

  1. support HSUPA 7.2 Mbps (4G)

  2. ada fasilitas GPS

  3. dingin, nggak cepat panas

  4. bisa ditambah antena external untuk memperkuat sinyal

Kekurangan modem Sierra 881u

  1. ukuran agak besar

  2. colokan USB model lipat, beresiko patah. solusinya gunakan USB docking.

  4. belum support sistem operasi linux

  1. klik kanan pada icon My Computer lalu pilih Properties

  2. klik tab Hardware

  3. klik tombol Device Manager

  4. klik bagian Ports (COM & LPT)

  5. cari bagian Sierra Wireless AT Command Port (UMTS)

  6. catat berapa nomor COM-nya, misalnya COM15, COM18, dsb

Setelah itu lakukan perintah AT (AT command) ke modem sierra anda, berikut langkah langkahnya :

  3. pada dialog Connect To, lihat bagian Connect using, pilih nomor port yang anda catat tadi, klik OK

  4. ketikan AT!HSDCAT=8 lalu tekan enter, maka akan muncul pesan OK

  5. ketikan AT!HSUCAT=5 lalu tekan enter, maka akan muncul pesan OK

  6. restart modem

  7. selesai, sekarang kecepatan modem anda 7.2 Mbps
